When Is Father's Day?
Next Father's Day (2027)
Sunday, June 20, 2027
Father's Day falls on the third Sunday in June. It is an observance, not a federal holiday.
About Father's Day
Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. The idea is usually credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who organized an early celebration in 1910 to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own.
President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation in 1972 that made it a permanent national observance. Cookouts, gifts, games and family time are the typical plans. Because it is always a Sunday, it does not change office or school schedules.
How the Date Is Set
Father's Day is held on the third Sunday in June. Because the rule is based on a weekday, the calendar date changes from year to year.
