Next Juneteenth (2027)
Saturday, June 19, 2027
Juneteenth falls on June 19 every year. In 2027 the federal day off is observed on Friday, June 18, 2027. It is a US federal holiday.
About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, June 19, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people there were free. The news arrived more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.
Communities have celebrated the day for generations with gatherings, music, food and reflection. It became a federal holiday in 2021, the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Federal offices and banks close, and when June 19 lands on a weekend the federal day off moves to the nearest weekday.
How the Date Is Set
Juneteenth is held on June 19 every year. The date stays the same every year, while the weekday moves forward by one day, or by two after a leap day.
